I’ve found that writing the basic idea for a song on my Acoustic Guitar is a much more successful way to song write no matter what type of music you are into. It makes sense to me that if a song can sound good when just played at a basic, no frills level like this then it’s certainly going to work in a full band situation complete with drums, as and maybe keyboard. When played on Acoustic Guitar then it’s also much easier to set a rhythm, tempo, chord structure and melody. So try it and see how you get on. You’ll be surprised at the cool things you can come up with.

Think of any great song and I bet you could probably play a good version of it on an acoustic with the vocal line. Writing on an acoustic also forces you to play simple clean chords which again is a good foundation to build on, so work from the bottom up like building anything.

In the family of small travel instruments, the Martin Backpacker guitar, by the famous acoustic instrument company C. F. Martin is a very portable, durable, and unique-looking instrument. These backpackers are made in four different variants: the steel-string, nylon string, and versions of each of these with electric pickups. There are also left-handed versions of each Backpacker, which all have a 15 fret, 24 inch scale, as well as the somewhat bell-shaped, crescent body, which has mahogany back and sides with a spruce top.

The decision between nylon and steel strings is merely personal playing preferences. For someone who plays classical guitar or similarly styled music, they can expect to get sound proportional to price, as can the steel string players, out of this tiny, portable guitar. The body is small enough to be transported where-ever you’re going. The classical nylon string Backpackers are going to have the common g-string problem, like its classical brethren from other manufacturers.
